BASEMENT CONVERSION

Making a new floor feel like its always been there.

The brief

Our clients were transforming their home from two storeys to three by converting their basement.

Set on a steeply sloping site, the house already contended with significant changes in level, and the introduction of a new floor brought both architectural and structural challenges.

The brief was to unlock this additional living space while carefully managing complex level changes and balancing the cost and impact of structural interventions.

Our response

We approached the design as an exercise in creative problem-solving, working with the site’s natural slope to create a solution that felt intuitive rather than imposed.

A key challenge was the basement itself: an underground space that could easily feel dark, cold, and disconnected. Central to our solution was the circulation strategy: carefully considered stairs and landing spaces that channel light, create a sense of openness, and link the basement seamlessly with the rest of the home.

Tell us about your idea.

Everything starts with a conversation.
